Ipswich
Mills Dam
Removal Project
Have questions on the National Historic Preservation Act and the Section 106 Process? Check the Project Updates page for the information presented by NOAA in January 2026.
The Ipswich Mills Dam is located in downtown Ipswich. The Town owns and maintains the dam and has been studying the feasibility of removal since 2013. The granite block dam was originally constructed to power adjacent mills, yet currently has no functional use. The Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration ranks this dam in the top 5% of all dams in Massachusetts based on the restoration potential of removal. Removing the dam would free the river, opening up over 45 miles of upstream habitat, in addition to restoring the rare freshwater-tidal habitat that the dam currently blocks.

“At first I wasn't sure because I enjoy watching the water rushing over the dam. Now...I can understand that the river environment would be much better without the dam.”
